Gyratorys

A Gyratory is a system of lanes and traffic lights that can have evolved from a busy roundabout no longer capable of handling its traffic, or be purpose built. The principle is that if you get in the correct lane when you enter the gyratory there is very little to do except keep to your lane and comply with the traffic lights as you go round. As decisions about when to go and when to stop, and which lane to be in are taken away from the driver, these systems can be considered to be safe. In Derby there is a fine example of a gyratory outside the City Hospital.
